Now if the Raspberry Pi Foundation could put a nice set of serial links onto the silicon that would accept code to boot from, we could finally have our cheap Transputer...

I have recently built a board with 2off RP2040 wired to a single flash chip (one boots first then releases the other). RP2040s programming each other via their SWD ports is also possible.

Sounds interesting. So an initial phase of booting could enable the same kind of switch fabric as a Transputer with a common message bus (T9000 style) - feels like a project for the Xmas holidays once the Beebs are finished.
