In shocking (at least to me) news the donor drive arrived (it was toast, defects far outrun the defect list) but using the board from it did get my drive functional again. I have at least some of my old data, configs suggest I had two drives in that machine originally (I knew I did at some point) and the only other drive I had kept that long is showing as not formatted. Who knows. Copied the data that is there off to the microsd card on the ZIDEFS cardOrdered a donor disk to swap the board to see if I can restore it that way.
I have my old code, applications (so many old applications!), Elite commander files and it shows that the IDE interface is working ok. It will take me a while to sort through all the old information. I left myself some files with the config commands for video direct and through the colourcard so that will help a lot.
First backing up all this data properly! Thanks for all the help here, I'm sure there will be more questions as I have the time to dig in.
