8-bit acorn hardware • Stupid question re battery backed RAM

Hi all

I've got one of Steve/IFEL's RAM/ROM boards in my Beeb. It's been in there for a couple of years now, and due to infrequent use, I'm thinking that it will soon be time to change the battery for the RAM. I've zero experience with this, so I wanted to ask a couple of daft questions:

Can the battery be changed with the machine switched on/should it be?

If I change the battery when the machine is off, won't that mean it loses the contents of the RAM?

I think that logically, it should be changed while the machine is on due to loss of battery power to the chip when switched off, but I'm extremely reluctant to just go ahead and do it in case something goes very wrong if I try and remove the battery when the power is on. I've looked through the supplied instructions but I can't find anything to tell me about how to change the battery.

Can anyone help? Thank you!
