Yeah I've also heard good things about codeberg but not used it yet.

Whats your use case here? If sharing code publicly yes a website is the way to go, but for private repositories you can just use git without hosting.

Of course you can just purely live with a normal local repo, but if you want to share between machines you can make a pure repository that doesn't have a checked out copy with "git init --headless" in any folder of your choosing, and then clone, pull and push to that from your working copy like any hosted git. Got a fair amount of milage out of that in grad school before we got corporate github.
