I've just tried it with an old format floppy. It's no better.

I can't get it to 'ls' RiscIx-format floppies either (complains about missing Super Block). I'm wondering if the drive's a bit poorly...

Will investigate tomorrow.

Edit: Incidentally, I've just discovered a *configuration option I've never heard of - "System Speed"
