off-topic • Re: Rechargeable Batteries: Are They Worth It?

Big Clive (from Youtube) did some measurements of the mAh capacity of alkaline AA batteries, and they worked out at about 2Ah. If we say the voltage goes down from 1.5V to 1V and call the average 1.25V, we can call that 2.5 watts-hours per cell, or 10Wh in a pack of four -- which you might just about still be able to get for £1. So we'll call a pound of batteries 10Wh. That's a bit on the generous side.

One pound of mains electricity is still a bit over 3kWh, or 1200 AA batteries. The charge and discharge cycle would have to be less than 1% efficient (and you can almost always do better than 50% in practice) for disposable batteries to work out cheaper.

Also, if the Big Green Gathering had actually been serious about reducing pollution, they would have banned disposable batteries -- which are more polluting, per kilowatt-hour, than a cheap two-stroke petrol generator.
