Just quick update on this as I have finally got back around to it.
A good friend from the other end of the country was kind enough to mail me his spare Master Compact to use for testing. Desoldering the 40pin CRTC on a machine that isn't mine wasn't overly fun, but it allowed me to prove I was right on the money and the CRTC was dead. So it is now alive again! Thanks to those who offered suggestions here that allowed me reach that conclusion.
Now I'm intimate with its internal working I have to work out how to actually use it![:lol:]( "Laughing")
