The sinclair microdrive made a surprisingly effective medium once ICL's engineers had sorted out its shortcomings. I used them a lot in my ICL One Per Desk (a rebadged Sinclair QL)
I found then slow compared to floppies but an absolute joy compared to the faffiness of cassettes!
In Spectrum land a lot of commercial games used fast loaders. They didn't seem particularly unreliable compared to other titles. Though I don't know if they required higher specc'd copying machines. Speccy games were often larger so the difference was noticeable.
I used to find waiting for tapes on the Electron interminable... I edited my copy of Elite to have much shorter inter block gaps!
