I've done the battery compartment thing for an A3000. Added the diode, the connector, used contacts/springs off Amazon, and a long-life 3.6V ER14505. I was following in the footsteps of this person:

It was a real tight fit with the spring, so I snipped half of it off lol. It seems to work fine - so far at least.
I wonder why they ultimately went with an on-board battery.
