Ian has also loaned me a 4mb upgrade by @IanS, which apparently disables the on-board RAM, so I put that into the sockets, connected the fly lead to LK32 pin 2 and set the jumper East.

The position of LK31 is unimportant with that upgrade, the wire on pin2 of LK32 disables the output of IC30, so the input from from LK31 can't affect the machine.

I should have one more set of boards which you are welcome to if you don't fancy re-adding the ram on-board and you get it working with the 4MB add-on.
