new projects in development: games • Re: Burger Time

Someone mentioned to me if I’d thought about 2bpp. I hadn’t at all and when I did think about it I didn’t think it would work for me but on some forced reflection to save memory etc. I revisited the sprites and I can plot all of them with only 4 colours if I separate the head from the body/feet. My monsters are 8x16 so two tiles of 8x8. Chef is a bit bigger and also has an extra colour for his feet but this is still doable. Also doing this means I can reuse the head sections for multiple animation frames, not sure how I missed this before.

So this will save me a fair bit of memory and allow for some padding on chef for easier animation and an also an extra couple of frames for peppering action.

Tricky asked me about fps and I’ll be honest, I don’t have much idea of the implication of the question but I’m realising that this is pretty important and in my redesigned logic I’m splitting the code down to run specific functions depending on the frame count.

My open question, are there any games that use 2bpp through out and are there disassemblies that I can go through or are there any big disadvantages?
