Try Partition Manager to see if it finds the drive, it uses low-level IDE commands to scan the IDE bus and will prompt to configure IDEFSDiscs, if it doesn't match what it finds. It should also handle partitioning large drives.
It will also patch two bugs in HCCS' IDEFS when it's loaded, if they've not already been patched. I don't recall the knock on effect of those bugs, off the top of my head one was in an internal SWI and the other in the Free handler.
