I took a punt, based on very, VERY slight variation seen on thermal camera, and removed one IC from the 'front' of the SIMM.
RISC OS is now happy and sees it as a working 64MB SIMM! So I think the right thing to do now is remove everything else from the same side of the module.
(Yes, these are 3v3 parts, as we've well known Memory Masters fit to these whopper SIMMs...)
