After a little bit of research and reading some old manuals that I found buried amongst some old retro, I've realised that the messages I am getting on the BBC B+ 128k are all correct.
However I did need to clean the pickup heads on the Torch disc drives to get a directory of the floppy discs.
Next step is to contact Ken Lowe about networking these Torch setups and my Atoms, Electrons, Masters etc
