Fascinating stuff both. Toby Churchill was brilliant. I don't think there's a better eye-blink system than one he was selling (and probably made) from ~30 years ago. The scan and select method dates back to the Possum/POSM around 1960, which itself would have been inspired by the simple communication cards / alphabet spelling long before.
