Just FYI... A quick try on my old mac laptop, which should be nicely network time-synced, and I find time.gov reckons it is 89ms adrift. Butreckons it is 12ms adrift.
How that compares to inevitable latency on serial ports, I don't know! I don't have a GPS serially connected, although I wish I did.
