The Solidisk board sounds similar to the IntegraB board with regards to the Shadow RAM. Steve talks about the IntegraB board in a bit more detail in this post:

For anyone who would like to take up this challenge, the IntegraB board is emulated in BeebEm, B-Em & MAME.(Edit: Depending how hard you want to work, the fact you've got an extra 4K might mean you can move entire chunks of line drawing code into sideways RAM, which would allow you to do the register twiddling twice (once at the start, once at the end) per line, rather than twice per pixel.)
