Well, that eventually unwound on Sega also with the Dreamcast (I have one of those toIf anything, the main competition to the CD32 were the existing Sega consoles, which also had huge catalogues of games, many available second-hand at bargain prices, along with the nemesis of any product: the prospect of what was just around the corner. I imagine that "no sale" had a considerable market share for a while.
But to be fair to Sega they did essentially kill the Arcade mall, making pretty much the same hardware available in your living room :/
