Ok yeah I think that's right, I was working off the impression that reducing A from a range of 0-255 to 0-1 would mean that 0-9 (and 10-127) would all get reduced to 0, rather than it alternating odds and evens. But it seems like I was just wrong about what 'reduce' means aha
