Thanks so much for the useful tips and information.
For CUB1, yes the same symptoms were present prior to recapping.
I'll go through with particular attention to the components you mention.

For CUB2, the flash over and smoke were definitely from the LOPT and not the trippler. On the insulation I can see carbonised areas around the red wire that connects to the trippler, and on the opposite side to the red wire where I observed the arcing.

The potential doner cub has a tube where the neck got snapped in transit to me after I purchased it on eBay a few years ago
