Discovered that my long-forgotten Nidd Valley Digimouse had succumbed to the inevitable 'liquefied ball' problem.
Based on comments here from many years ago I found a 32mm solid rubber replacement on AliExpress, for 82p:

...and can confirm that - one the tar-like residue had been cleaned from the mouse's internals - it works superbly.
I realise this is quite a niche topic but though it might be of interest to someone.
