Instead I had to use my programmer to remove the lock condition!

Can I ask, what programmer do you use? Something like:

• this bare board that specifies 28C EPROM chips

• an Arduino affair saying it's for AT28C EEPROMs

• a TL866 whose user manual covers the gamut

Have discovered at least two of my 28C chips don't respond to SRLOAD, regardless of SRUNLOCKing or UNPLUGging - the Electron just hangs. They also return 'locked' with EELOAD even after EEP32-ing. And changing banks doesn't seem to have any effect.
