Problem with floppy identified and solved (my fault).
Relevant modules have been softloaded in from floppy and desktop has been successfully shown for the first time in roughly a quarter of a century.
Next step: Try to format the hard drive and get it to soft-boot to the desktop by default.
After that, I really need to get the mouse working…
Edit: Hard drive now formatted, with fewer errors than I’d expect from a drive that’s 36 years old.
