I think another reason that most games made OS calls liberally throughout was to make an Electron version easy to produce. I don't think multi-load was much of a concern most of the time. But the ease of getting sound, text, graphics primitives through the OS made it a lazy option. Even Firetrack leans on the OS for that stuff!
