Thanks, I can see the (C)Acorn message split between pages &25 and &26 so that's a good sign. The geometry (cylinders and heads at least) match the spec for the Rodime RO3085S so I think that's another good sign.
Not sure why a mode select would fail but I think from memory possibly the FileStore formatter is attempting to access the drive and getting the 1C error before it actually does the mode select. I think I may have had that in the past, in which case it should be possible to edit the formatter slightly to ignore the error and carry on.
