I'd guess the cable was for a joystick or something, effectively pressing keys when used. With a basic switched joystick and using only a single row or column of the keyboard matrix it would be fine.
It's probabky plugged into the mouse port as a convienient place to store it. I'd be very surprised if it was meant to be used like that. (If those links were intended to be permanant, you'd do it all internally to the keyboard, without a trailing cable).
