8-bit acorn hardware • Re: Is there any need to re-cap a second processor PSU?

I'm currently going down this road too. Got a couple of model B machines out of the garage, ejected the smoke, and then re-capped them.

When I powered up my second processor box however, I was getting a much less intense but persistent magic smoke.

I went for it and dismantled the PSU, and when powering up again, could see that one of the diodes on the output of the transformer was the problem. It was practically bubbling when powered up. It later snapped while I was trying to de-solder it from the board. (They are the ones labelled D1 and D2 in the 6502 Second Processor Service Manual)

I've ordered what I think are suitable replacements parts. I'm not sure if this sort of thing usually fails like the capacitors do, or if I have just been unlucky, but just thought I'd flag in case it's worth replacing these too when servicing.

Thanks to everyone who supplied help with the transistor insulation and heat sink as I was wondering what to do with thermal paste and plastic sheet too :)
