Is there another way to do what I'm trying to do without using CLEAR?

This assembles a string once at &100 to get the length, CLEARs the guards and assembles it again at the target. It is kind of awful.

Thanks, that's a neat trick! I am guessing this won't work properly with relative branches, but otherwise it's not a bad option - and it's very nice there is enough flexibility to play tricks like this.
