You want to use the audio/video path (on page 24 of the PDF I have) to try and track where the problem is...
Only just saw this, thank you! The info panel reports "mono" on areas with sound, so I think that suggests that whatever puts that on the screen is detecting audio in the frame being played, but the actual sound is being lost elsewhere. Anyway, I will check things out in more detail very shortly.

I was trying to find a way to make it guarantee it goes wonky so I will at least know if I have done something which cures it, as when I switched it on today, it was playing fine. Yesterday I was doing some big gotos which seemed to set it off, but then I remembered that I accidentally dialled up frame 70000 instead of 7000 which send the laser crashing into the back of the cabinet, and it was wonky after that.

I just did that again now, though I don't plan to do it regularly as it's not exactly sensible, but it does seem to start the wonkiness. So I wonder if it something to do with the radial mirror becoming misaligned.
