Thank you for the replies, I hadn't seen the AllMem.txt before so I am more informed than I was.
From this it looks as though &A00 and &B00 are the safest targets? Do I have to do anything to disable Tape and Soft Keys so that I can use these?
&A00 and &B00 are good targets - you can use them straight away. Just as long as you don’t use the tape or serial port or define any function keys, then you’ll be fine.

Even better is the block from &400 to &7FF, which is completely free for you to use with no risk, as it’s only used by the current language, and as you are in machine code, there is no current language.
