It's not a foolish idea at all, and would certainly be feasible. Generally I've tried to avoid making modifications to the 6502/Z80/6809 CPU cores, as it makes them harder to update when new versions are available. Also, it's possible that a new register value would be immediately overwritten by an in-flight instruction. I think I found that with the 6502 anyway, as there is a certain about of pipelining in the CPU core.I admit that I don't have enough knowledge on VHDL to try my foolish idea.
The other issue with the Z80/GODIL 250 build is that space is very tight, so I doubt there is room for changes like this.
