No I am using my regular phone line which is VOIP now , I have a DECT adaptor that I plug my landlineWhen you say it is working.... you have set up your own phone network?
I didn't think you can still use modems anymore since all BT telephone lines went VOIP some time ago?
phone into. In this case I just plug the modem in. With V23 it works pretty good. There is the odd fluffed
character of course but generally fine. some lines are better than others . Telstar's dialup number uses
SIPgate which I have found really decent . On others I don't know.
I'm not sure the changeover has happened everywhere yet, but will probably still work for lower baud rates.
Yeah not everywhere has switched over. I was just told it was happening but couldn't do jack about it.
Connecting was perfect beforehand now I have to live with a bit of corruption but it is pretty good still.
Modem quality I find can be important. I have very few issues (almost none) when I use my USR Courier,
the PRISM 1000 (which is really basic handshaking wise) is vulnerable to the odd pop or whistle on the line,
producing a duff character here and there but still very usable. Some VOIP lines are better than others too.
Nice find.
I had the original one from CommunITel itself a while back along with a lot of their BBC equipment they used for developing the CommunITel software. It was donated to the museum in Cambridge along with a mass of documentation. I hope they realise its import.
Thanks John , agreed. These particular modems were really important history wise in the Info Technology roll out
to schools at that time. Obviously I don't need to tell you that. Without your archive work on Communitel and other
packages that whole aspect of Comms/Networking in a school environment might have slipped into the dustbin.
You should get more credit for preserving it all. Flaxcottage is an invaluable archive. Indeed for myself , Night Owl
couldn't have happened without it.
