Hi, building stuff on the 1MHz port and the decode board needs power as well as anything connected to it. The environment I am connecting to has +15v 0v -15v. A 7805 will do the job but dropping from +15v to +5v is going to need a heatsink and this can get very large as 500mA means the 7805 is going to have to dissipate 5W.
Searching around I came across “5V-36V to 5V DC-DC Step Down 5W Buck Converter” which can deliver 5v at 800mA without breaking a sweat.
Has anybody had any experience with these things, I ordered some off the bay and they seem to work OK and I modified one to lay “flattish” against the board, green thing bottom left of the board.
