Isn't there a filetype for a BASIC program saved as text, which *BASIC will just load as it is?
BasText &FD1.
Also if a text file is set to BASIC &FFB it will be loaded and tokenised, but with a message "Program renumbered".
If not, there's Steve Fryatt's Tokenize utility which can convert in both directions: https://www.stevefryatt.org.uk/risc-os/build-tools
BasConv
Hmm. When was support for BasText &FD1 type added to RISC OS? I use Tokenize.
Presently I am experimenting with basic -chain <thing$dir>.RunImage which surprisingly works, but you do get a brief flash on the screen of the default text output window, presumably displaying "Program renumbered", but it goes away I suspect when it calls wimp initialise.

I haven't looked at the tokenisation utilities yet, if they either directly or indirectly could be made to work like 'make' so only run if !RunImage and RunImage had different date stamps, that would be good. Rebuilding !RunImage could then be done in the !Run file before loading it. TEXTLOAD/TEXTSAVE turn out to be commands not statements, so a stub !RunImage with a TEXTLOAD didn't work.

I am testing on a RISC PC with 4.39, but would like to try to keep backwards compatibility to my A4 (if I can revive it).
